The Fiat X1/9 is a fantastic 1970s mid-engine sports car design initiated by Bertone and adopted by Fiat. The Fiat X1/9 Spider Coupé was presented to the public in November 1972. The bodywork was produced by Bertone. The Fiat X1/9 Spider Coupé features a detachable roof panel that can be stowed away in the front luggage compartment. The X1/9 is powered by a 75 bhp four-cylinder 1300 Sport engine derived from the Fiat 128 Rallye. The engine is located behind the seats to obtain the best possible weight distribution and road holding qualities. In 1978 a revised model was introduced and named Fiat X1/9 ‘Five Speed’. The car featured a more powerful 85 bhp 1500 cc engine and a five-speed gearbox. The Fiat X1/9 was extremely successful, especially in the USA. In 1982 a more luxurious ‘IN’ version was marketed by Bertone. In 1988 the last special version saw the light of day with the name ‘Gran Finale’. From 1972 until 1989 180.000 Fiat X1/9 cars were built. As with many cars from the 1970s rust was their biggest enemy and not many cars survived the test of time. It is hard to find perfectly preserved examples of this very desirable Bertone design. The Fiat X1/9 is one of the most iconic Fiat models; a true classic.
