The Fiat Barchetta was presented in 1995 as a compact two-seat roadster designed to revive the spirit of Italian open-top motoring. Its name, meaning “little boat” in Italian, deliberately echoed the tradition of lightweight sports cars from the post-war era. Development had begun in 1990 under the project name *Tipo B Spider 176*, with styling overseen by Andreas Zapatinas and Alessandro Cavazza at Fiat’s Centro Stile. The prototype work was carried out by Stola, while Peter Davis contributed to the interior design. Built upon the Fiat Punto platform, the Barchetta featured a shortened wheelbase to enhance agility and driving pleasure. Power came from a 1.8-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing, producing 131 PS. This allowed the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of around 200 km/h. Assembly was initially entrusted to the coachbuilder Maggiora at Chivasso, a company with a long tradition in Italian car production. When Maggiora closed in 2002, Fiat transferred production to its Mirafiori plant in Turin. The Barchetta was offered in several trim levels and special editions, often distinguished by unique colours and interior details. One of its most distinctive design features was the flush-fitting door handles, inspired by the Cisitalia 202 GT of the late 1940s. In 2003 the model received a facelift, with revised bumpers and minor mechanical updates. Production continued until 2005, marking a decade-long presence in Fiat’s line-up. Although never officially sold in right-hand drive markets such as the United Kingdom, it found popularity across continental Europe. Today the Barchetta is remembered as Fiat’s stylish attempt to rekindle the classic spider tradition in the modern era.
